Shelby

Shelby's motto: Just do it.

Shelby was adopted March 4, 2002 from the Animal Humane Society. Like Tasha, I found her at the PetSmart Adoption Center. The first time I saw her, she didn't seem friendly at all. Because she looked so much like Tigger, I went back the next day, expecting to be convinced not to adopt her. On my second visit, she was so friendly that I fell in love with her.

After I got Shelby home, I started to think maybe I had made a mistake. The first day she wouldn't stop kneading her bed except when she was rubbing against me. She has a broken tooth, and I was afraid maybe she had been brain damaged from previous abuse.

Shelby was in her previous home only about a month because she didn't get along with one of the other cats there. Before that she was in a foster home for about a year. She had been rescued when she was abused and pregnant. She had five kittens and then was spayed. Her foster mother said she got along with most cats as long as they stood up to her. Tasha used to be a big bully herself, and she does stand up to Shelby when she feels threatened.

Shelby is the wildest and most high-strung of my cats. She has a very loud purr when petted, but can't stand to be petted, or held for very long. She likes to hang out with Tasha or me, but usually prefers that I keep my hands off her. She follows Tasha's lead in choosing where to nap. When she is not napping, she tends to follow me from room to room. She likes to find a ball and entice me into playing with her.

Shelby is easily scared, but also is bold in some ways. She panics and hides at the sound of a visitor. On the other hand, she is likely to climb on and "steal" things she shouldn't. She also tries to swallow things that could choke her or damage her internal organs.
