Cats on Old Advertising Trade Cards
Both children and animals were popular subjects on trade cards of the late nineteenth century. The cats on cards advertising products targeted at women are usually sweet pet cats or cats doing people things. Some cards, however, depicted cats in a less flattering light as predators, fighters, or victims of abuse. The McLaughlin's Coffee card shown above is a large size trade card, 5-3/8" X 6-7/8", by Donaldson Brothers, N.Y. Most trade cards were no more than half this size.
